The Smelling Brain - Thesis

Immersive “storysmelling” experiences and artificial olfactory organs.

Research document and olfactory installation, 2024

Artistic research document developed as PART 1 (research semester) of Master Industrial Design graduation project at The Royal Academy of Art, The Hague. Speculative/fictional writing, anatomical/scientific literature review, and olfactory experimentation on emotion, memory, sensory loss, pollution, and immersive “storysmelling” narratives.

Positioned between fictional narrative and scientific inquiry, the project reflects on the emotional consequences of pollution-driven sensory erosion and the growing disconnection between bodies, memories, intimacy, and perception within contemporary industrialised societies.

The speculative concept of The Smelling Brain proposes immersive “storysmelling” experiences and artificial olfactory organs as therapeutic and corrective tools for engaging with endangered emotional smellscapes, intimate memories, and the invisible dimensions of human perception.
